Myanmar Begins Counting Votes in Second Round of Elections Amid Low Voter Turnout

Myanmar has started the vote counting process after closing the polls for the second round of general elections. The voting atmosphere was quiet, with a noticeably low number of voters participating.

On 11 January 2026 GMT+7, foreign news agencies reported that Myanmar authorities began counting votes after closing the polls for the second round of general elections, which are organized by the military government following the 2021 coup that ousted the civilian administration.

The second round of elections took place in 100 constituencies nationwide, including several areas in Yangon. The voting atmosphere was quiet, with a clearly low turnout. The third round is scheduled for 25 January.

Reports indicated that in the first round last December, the Union Solidarity and Development Party, widely seen as representing the military, secured nearly 90% of the votes. Independent candidates did not win any seats, and many parties acknowledged that public participation was lower than ever before. Additionally, some eligible voters were unfamiliar with using the electronic voting machines.
