Donald Trump posted a message urging Iranians to continue protesting, announcing the cancellation of all meetings with Iranian authorities, and promising that aid is on its way.
On Tuesday, 13 Jan 2026 GMT+7, U.S. President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social calling on Iranians to keep protesting and seize various institutions, while announcing the cancellation of all meetings with Iranian officials and pledging that aid is coming.
"Patriotic Iranians, continue protesting—seize your institutions and agencies! Keep a list of the murderers and violent perpetrators; they will be held accountable. I have canceled all meetings with Iranian officials until the senseless killing of protesters ends. Aid is near. MIGA!!! (Make Iran Great Again)," he wrote, signing off as "President Donald J. Trump."
Trump’s statement came as an anonymous Iranian official told Reuters that the death toll from violent protests ongoing for nearly two weeks may have reached 2,000. However, he blamed "terrorists" for the deaths of both protesters and security personnel.
Meanwhile, the U.S.-based human rights group HRANA reported that as of late Monday night, 10,721 people had been arrested. Opposition groups outside Iran believe the actual death toll is much higher than 2,000.
Earlier Monday evening, Donald Trump announced a 25% import tariff on goods from any country that trades with Iran, a major oil exporter. He also said that additional military measures are among the options he is considering to punish Iran for suppressing protesters.
