Trump Declares Not Possessing Greenland Unacceptable, Urges NATO to Push for U.S. Control

Donald Trump declared firmly that not possessing Greenland is unacceptable and asserted that NATO should push for the United States to take control of the territory.

On Wednesday, 14 Jan 2026 GMT+7, U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated his desire to possess Greenland, stating, "Anything less" than U.S. control of Greenland is "unacceptable."

Trump claimed that the U.S. needs to possess Greenland, a self-governing territory of Denmark, for national security purposes, which would also strengthen the NATO alliance.

"NATO would be far more formidable and effective if Greenland were in the hands of the United States," Trump said in a post on Truth Social, adding, "Anything less is unacceptable."

Trump's comments came while U.S. Vice President D.J. Vance hosted a meeting with Denmark's foreign minister and Greenland's foreign minister, along with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, on Wednesday morning local time.

In the social media post, Trump also reiterated his claim that acquiring Greenland "is crucial to the Golden Dome project we are building," referring to the missile defense system the Pentagon is developing. He further stated that NATO leaders should push for U.S. possession of Greenland as well.

"NATO should lead the way for us to get it (Greenland). If we don’t, Russia or China will, but that will never happen! Militarily, without the enormous power of the United States—which I largely built during my first term and am now elevating further—NATO will never be an effective force or deterrent, not even close! They know this well, and so do I," Trump's post stated.

On Tuesday, Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen announced at a press conference in Copenhagen, Denmark: "Greenland does not want to be possessed by the United States. Greenland does not want to be governed by the United States. Greenland will not be part of the United States. We choose Greenland as it is today, part of the Kingdom of Denmark."

Trump responded to this declaration by saying, "That's their problem. I disagree with him. I don’t know who he is or anything about him, but that will definitely be a big problem for him."
