A recent opinion poll shows that about 75% of Americans oppose the U.S. seizing Greenland, while most believe oil is the main factor behind U.S. operations in Venezuela.
On Thursday, 15 Jan 2026 GMT+7, CNN released a new poll conducted by SSRS, finding that about three in four Americans, or approximately 75%, oppose the U.S. attempt to take control of Greenland.
The poll found that only 25% of Americans support the U.S. effort to take over this semi-autonomous territory of Denmark. Even among supporters of the president's Republican Party, opinion is split evenly at 50-50.
Meanwhile, Democrats and independents leaning toward the Democratic Party strongly oppose this move, with 94% opposing, including 80% who strongly oppose it. Nearly 80% of independents with no party affiliation also oppose the plan.
Last Wednesday, Trump posted on his social media site, Truth Social, that anything "less than" the U.S. taking control of Greenland is "unacceptable."
This statement came before Danish ministers met with Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the White House, which appeared to do little to bring the two sides closer to an agreement.
The poll also found that the public has little appetite for U.S. power expansion policies, with nearly 6 in 10 worried that the president is overreaching in expanding American influence, and only one-third believe his efforts are appropriate.
The number of Americans who think Trump's foreign policy decisions during this term have damaged America's image globally has risen to 57%, up from 53% in the previous poll last summer 2025.
Fifty-two percent of Americans still oppose U.S. military operations in Venezuela, while 48% support them. Most Americans (64%) believe oil is the main reason behind the U.S. military actions there, followed by military power demonstration (51%), drugs (43%), and lastly to improve Venezuelans' quality of life (26%).
Most Americans remain doubtful that U.S. operations in Venezuela will lead to a stable government within the next year, and about two-thirds say there is at least some likelihood that these operations will result in a long-term U.S. military presence there.
