Donald Trump has threatened to use the Insurrection Act to deploy troops to the state of Minnesota amid protests against immigration enforcement officers and daily clashes.
Foreign news agencies reported that on Thursday, 15 Jan 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump posted a threat saying he might invoke the Insurrection Act, allowing military forces to be sent into Minnesota amid rising tensions after clashes between protesters and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers.
"If the corrupt politicians of Minnesota refuse to enforce the law and do not stop the professional agitators and rebels from attacking the patriotic ICE agents who are merely doing their job, I will declare the Insurrection Act," Trump stated in a post on Truth Social.
Trump's threat came after an ICE officer shot a Venezuelan man who was attempting to flee a vehicle inspection in Minneapolis on Wednesday, just one week after an ICE officer fatally shot a U.S. citizen.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees immigration enforcement under Trump, reported that during Wednesday's incident, two individuals attacked federal agents with broom handles and snow shovels while the officers were struggling with the Venezuelan man, who DHS identified as an undocumented immigrant.
