Cambodia Protests Thai Navys Seizure of Fishing Boat and Arrest of Four Cambodian Fishermen at Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh

Cambodia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs submitted a diplomatic protest to the Thai Embassy after the Thai Navy seized a Cambodian fishing boat and arrested four fishermen, claiming the incident occurred in Cambodian waters near Koh Kong province.

On 15 January 2026, Cambodia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation issued a diplomatic note to the Royal Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh expressing a formal protest against Thailand following the seizure of a Cambodian fishing boat and arrest of four fishermen by the Thai Navy. Cambodia affirmed that the incident took place within its sovereign waters near Koh Kong province.

The diplomatic note stated the incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. on 6 January 2026 at coordinates 11°33'30"N and 102°51'39"E, which Cambodia confirms lie within its waters. While Cambodia welcomed the release of the four fishermen on 11 January, it continues to officially demand the immediate return of the seized fishing boat and all fishing equipment.

The statement strongly condemns the action as a violation of Cambodia's sovereignty and jurisdiction, urging Thailand to avoid similar incidents in the future to preserve the good relations between the two countries.
