Trump announced a 10% import tariff on eight European countries, including Denmark, effective 1 Feb 2026, rising to 25% in June. The tariffs will remain in effect until the purchase of Greenland is completed.
On Saturday, 17 Jan 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump announced via a post on Truth Social that the U.S. will impose a 10% customs tariff on goods imported from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland, effective from 1 February.
Trump stated, “We have subsidized Denmark and countries in the European Union, among others, for many years by not charging customs duties or other forms of compensation. Now, after many centuries, it is time for Denmark to give back.”
“World peace is at risk! China and Russia want Greenland, and Denmark is powerless to act. Currently, they only have two dog sleds for defense, one of which was added recently. Only the United States under President Donald J. Trump can play this game and succeed greatly! No one will dare touch this sacred land, especially as U.S. national security and global security are at stake.”
“Moreover, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland have all traveled to Greenland for unknown purposes. This poses a grave threat to the safety, security, and survival of our world. These countries are playing a dangerously risky game that creates unacceptable risks that cannot be allowed to continue.”
“Therefore, to protect world peace and security, it is essential to implement strict measures to end this potentially dangerous situation quickly and decisively.”
“Starting 1 February 2026, all the aforementioned countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, United Kingdom, Netherlands, and Finland) will be subject to a 10% customs tariff on all goods imported into the United States. On 1 June 2026, this tariff will increase to 25%.”
“These tariffs will remain until a complete and final agreement for the purchase of Greenland is reached. The U.S. has attempted this transaction for over 150 years. Many presidents have tried for good reasons, but Denmark has always refused.”
“Now, due to the Golden Dome project and modern offensive and defensive weapon systems, the need to ‘take control’ is particularly urgent. Hundreds of billions of dollars are being spent on security projects related to ‘The Dome,’ including possible protection for Canada. This highly sophisticated system will only operate at full capacity and efficiency if this territory is included, due to coordinates, range, and territorial scope.”
“The United States is ready to open negotiations with Denmark and/or these countries that pose great risks, even though we have done much for them, including providing maximum protection for decades. Thank you for your attention to this matter! Donald J. Trump, President of the United States.”
