Severe Wildfires in Chile Claim 16 Lives, Displace 20,000 People Government Declares Disaster State

Wildfires in Chile continue to burn intensely, with the latest reports confirming 16 deaths, hundreds of homes destroyed, and more than 20,000 people evacuated.

International news agencies report that Chilean President Gabriel Boric declared a disaster situation in the Ñuble and Biobío regions, which are facing severe wildfires resulting in 16 fatalities and at least 20,000 people forced to evacuate.

The most dangerous fires have spread through the dry forests near the coastal city of Concepción. Disaster relief officials report that around 250 homes have already been destroyed.

Conaf, Chile's forestry agency, revealed that on Sunday firefighters were battling 24 wildfires across the country, while President Boric declared a disaster state in both regions, emphasizing, "We have mobilized all available resources."

Local media report that so far, the wildfires have burned over 20,000 hectares (approximately 125,000 rai) in the two regions. Most evacuations occurred in the cities of Penco and Lirquén, located north of Concepción, with a combined population of about 60,000.

Strong winds amid high summer temperatures have fueled the flames, putting Chilean communities at risk and hindering firefighters’ efforts.
