Two High-Speed Passenger Trains Collide Loudly in Spain, At Least 21 Dead and Over 70 Seriously Injured

Two high-speed passenger trains collided near a city in southern Spain, killing at least 21 people and injuring many. Authorities have suspended all train services connecting Madrid and Andalusia and are urgently assisting stranded passengers.

On 19 January 2026, a severe collision occurred between two high-speed passenger trains near the city of Adamuze in the Andalusia region, resulting in at least 21 deaths and over 73 serious injuries.

Edif, the company managing Spain's rail network, reported that one high-speed train traveling from Malaga to Madrid derailed and crossed onto an adjacent track, colliding with another train coming from Madrid to Huelva, causing both trains to derail.

The accident happened about 10 minutes after the train departed Malaga at 18:40 local time. That train carried approximately 300 passengers. Andalusia's rescue units are working to free passengers trapped inside the train cars. Authorities have temporarily suspended all train services between Madrid and Andalusia and opened major stations—such as Atocha, Seville, Córdoba, Malaga, and Huelva—to support relatives of the victims.

King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia expressed deep condolences, sending messages of sympathy to the families of the deceased and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the government is closely coordinating with emergency services to provide full assistance to those affected.
