Donald Trump stated he no longer feels the need to focus solely on peace after Norway did not award him the Nobel Peace Prize, and he confirmed his determination to take control of Greenland.
On Monday, 19 Jan 2026 GMT+7, foreign news agencies reported that U.S. President Donald Trump sent a message to the Prime Minister of Norway, saying that Norway's decision not to award him the Nobel Peace Prize for Peace made him feel he no longer needed to focus solely on peace.
"Considering that your country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize, even though I have stopped more than eight wars, I no longer feel obligated to think only about peace. Although it remains one of the top priorities, now I can focus on what is ‘good and appropriate’ for the United States," the message stated.
Trump added, "The world will not be safe unless we have absolute and decisive control over the island of Greenland."
The U.S. CBS News confirmed that the message and its contents are genuine.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said he received the message on Sunday as a reply to messages he and Finnish President Sauli Niinistö had sent to Trump earlier.
Støre said they had expressed opposition to Trump's proposed new tariff increases, which are linked to the Greenland dispute, and emphasized the need to reduce tensions while suggesting a three-way telephone discussion on the same day.
The Norwegian leader also noted that the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by an independent committee, not the Norwegian government. Meanwhile, Trump did not hide his desire to win the 2025 Peace Prize, but the committee awarded it to Maria Corina Machado, leader of the Venezuelan opposition.
Trump repeatedly emphasized that the U.S. must take control of Greenland for national security reasons, as the island's location is suitable for establishing an early warning system against missile attacks and monitoring ships in the region.
Trump has said he wants the U.S. to buy Greenland and has not ruled out using military force to seize the island, despite Denmark being a member of the NATO security alliance.
Over the past weekend, Trump announced a 10% tariff on goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland starting 1 Feb, increasing to 25% in June. The tariffs will remain until a full and final agreement on purchasing Greenland is reached.
In the message to Støre, Trump stated that Denmark cannot protect Greenland from Russia or China, questioning, "Why do they have the ‘right to possess’ it? There is no written document; they just had a ship dock there centuries ago, but we have also had ships there."
"I have contributed more to NATO than anyone since its founding, and now NATO should do something for the United States," he concluded.
