A major multi-vehicle accident occurred on a highway in Michigan, USA, after a snowstorm influenced by the Great Lakes covered the area, causing over 100 cars to crash or slide off the road.
Severe weather from the snowstorm led to a chain-reaction crash involving more than 100 vehicles. Michigan state police ordered the closure of both directions of Interstate 196 near Grand Rapids to expedite the removal of wrecked vehicles, including over 30 semi-trucks. Several people were injured, but no deaths have been reported so far.
This incident is the latest impact of a major winter storm moving across multiple U.S. regions. The National Weather Service issued warnings for extreme cold and snowstorms in several states, ranging from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania to New York.
Earlier, snow even reached northern Florida and affected American football games in Massachusetts and Chicago. Officials warned that many areas in central Florida and southeastern Georgia could experience overnight freezing temperatures through Tuesday.
Authorities expect the highway to remain closed for several more hours to clear the area and ensure the safety of travelers.
