UN Emphasizes Trump’s Board of Peace Has Mandate Only for Gaza Peace Plan, Not Global Missions

The UN emphasizes that the "Board of Peace," a peace committee established by former President Donald Trump, has been approved by the UN Security Council to work exclusively on the Gaza Strip peace plan and is not related to global missions.

On 20 Jan 2025 GMT+7, Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the United Nations, reiterated that the "Board of Peace," a new mechanism proposed by US President Donald Trump, has been authorized by the UN Security Council (UNSC) to operate solely on matters related to the Gaza Strip peace plan, excluding other global conflict missions.

The deputy spokesperson stated at the daily press briefing that the UN has previously worked with similar organizations, some of which have formal cooperation agreements with the UN, while others do not. He emphasized that it remains to be seen how the Board of Peace will be established and operated before considering a formal relationship.

Earlier reports indicated that European Commission members such as Russia, Belarus, and Thailand are the latest invited to join this committee. Meanwhile, although France was approached, it has not yet responded. French officials close to President Emmanuel Macron revealed that France has concerns regarding respect for UN principles and structure, leading to its current decision to withhold participation.

At the same time, questions have arisen about whether the Board of Peace might become a parallel or competing mechanism to the UN Security Council, the international security body established after World War II. Senior Israeli officials have openly opposed the initiative, stating that the committee is detrimental to Israel and should be abolished.
