Russia launched multiple attacks across Ukraine with drones and missile rockets, causing half of Kyiv to lose power and leaving residents unable to use heating devices amid temperatures of -10 degrees Celsius.
Foreign news agencies reported on 20 Jan 2026 that Russia carried out a large airstrike on Ukraine overnight into Tuesday, resulting in half of Kyiv's residential buildings losing electricity and heating once again while temperatures nationwide hovered around -10 degrees Celsius.
Russian drones, missile rockets, and cruise missiles struck several areas across Ukraine, including Kyiv, the central city of Dnipro, and the southern city of Odesa. Air raid sirens sounded almost continuously throughout the night, and on Tuesday, sirens rang again as Russian drones and cruise missiles approached the capital.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said many weapons were intercepted, but the cost of this defense amounted to about 80 million euros, covering only the expenses of air defense missiles.
From Monday to Tuesday, at least four people died and 33 were injured nationwide due to the attacks. Over 5,400 residential buildings in Kyiv, each containing dozens of apartments, suffered heating system failures, and most parts of the capital also lacked running water.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that nearly 80% of these buildings had just had their heating systems repaired and restored after the major attack on 9 January, which caused almost a citywide blackout.
Kyiv municipality reported that more than 10,000 people, including nearly 800 children, had to take shelter in the city's subway stations on Monday night.
Ukraine’s president was scheduled to attend the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Tuesday, but following the overnight attacks, Zelensky decided to remain in Kyiv.
The Ukrainian leader added that he would travel to Davos only after documents concerning “security guarantees” with the United States and a comprehensive plan leading to prosperity were ready for signing.
Zelensky also said the country’s air defense needs remain critical. Russia is using ballistic missiles in attacks “much more than before,” and Moscow’s capacity to produce these missiles has not diminished.
