Spain is shaken by another train accident. This time, a suburban train near Barcelona derailed and crashed into a retaining wall, killing the driver and injuring dozens of passengers. The incident occurred amid a severe rainstorm, while another train derailed due to a rockslide.
On 21 January 2026 GMT+7, another train accident occurred in Catalonia, Spain, when a Rodalies suburban train derailed and crashed into an embankment between the towns of Lleida and Sant Sadurní near Barcelona on Tuesday evening. The crash resulted in the death of the train driver and at least 37 injuries, including four critically injured.
Claudí Gayardo, inspector of the Catalonia Fire Department, stated that all passengers were evacuated from the train. At least 11 ambulances arrived to assist the injured, and more than 35 firefighting teams operated at the scene.
Rescue teams reported that one passenger was trapped inside the train but was safely rescued. They later confirmed no additional people were trapped and conducted a thorough search of the surrounding area. Some injured passengers were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Additionally, another train on the Barcelona suburban network derailed the same day. Spanish Railways reported that the train's axle was hit by rocks that fell due to the rainstorm while traveling from Blanes to Maçanet-Massanes. No injuries were reported, but train services were temporarily suspended.
These accidents occurred amid strong storms hitting northeastern Spain. Many coastal areas on both the eastern and northwestern shores were under severe weather warnings. The derailment in Catalonia happened just two days after a high-speed train collision in Andalusia, one of Spain's deadliest train accidents in over a decade, which has claimed at least 42 lives.
