A severe cold wave covering southern China has caused Shanghai to experience snowfall for the first time in eight years, delighting city residents while authorities warn the cold spell could last at least three days.
Residents of Shanghai faced unexpected heavy snowfall after a severe cold wave swept across southern China, underscoring the region's weather volatility. Just last week, the city experienced unusually high temperatures reaching 20 degrees Celsius, with local media reporting that some scallions bloomed ahead of season. The last significant snowfall in Shanghai was in January 2018.
Chinese state media reported that many areas in the country also experienced sharp temperature drops, especially Jiangxi and Guizhou provinces, located south of the Yangtze and Huai Rivers. Guizhou is expected to see temperatures fall by 10–14 degrees Celsius within a short period.
Meanwhile, Chinese authorities ordered the closure of at least 241 main road sections across 12 provinces, including Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, and Heilongjiang, due to heavy snowfall and icy road conditions, to prevent accidents, according to CCTV.
Meteorological experts stated that this event reflects increasing weather volatility in China amid concerns over climate change, which could have long-term effects on daily life, transportation, and the economy.
