Trump Reaches Framework Agreement on Greenland, Announces No Need for Additional European Taxes

Trump revealed that he has reached a framework agreement for a future Greenland deal with the NATO Secretary General and stated that there is no longer a need to impose additional taxes on Europe.

On Wednesday, 21 Jan 2026 GMT+7, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he has finalized a cooperation framework plan that meets his demands regarding Greenland.

Trump stated that the agreement, which he discussed with the NATO Secretary General, means he no longer needs to enforce new import tax measures on European countries that had previously opposed his ambitions to annex Greenland.

“Following a highly productive meeting with Mark Rutte, we have established the framework for a future agreement concerning Greenland, which in fact covers the entire Arctic region,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“If successfully implemented, this solution will be excellent for the United States and all NATO member countries. Based on this mutual understanding, I will not enforce the tax measures scheduled to take effect on 1 February.”

Trump added that further discussions regarding the “Golden Dome” missile defense system are ongoing, emphasizing that Greenland will be a crucial part of this system.

The U.S. leader also said that senior U.S. officials, including Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and his special envoy Steve Witkoff, will be responsible for these negotiations.

However, President Donald Trump has not clearly stated whether the new Greenland framework agreement includes U.S. ownership of the island.

When CNN’s Caitlan Collins asked if the agreement fulfilled his desire to own Greenland, Trump paused briefly before responding, “It is a long-term deal.”

“It is the ultimate long-term deal, and I think it puts everyone in a very good position,” Trump said as he was leaving the World Economic Forum summit in Davos, Switzerland.

Trump explained that it is an agreement satisfactory to all and meets his objectives regarding control over Greenland.

Earlier, Mark Rutte praised President Trump during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, thanking Trump for helping encourage European countries and Canada to become more actively involved in supporting this military alliance.

Rutte told Trump there has been “a long-standing grievance” within the NATO alliance since its founding: that European countries have not paid their fair share compared to the U.S.

Rutte thanked Trump for his role in the 2025 agreement where NATO members pledged to allocate 5% of their GDP to defense or security spending by 2035, noting that NATO members have lost many personnel fighting alongside the U.S. in Afghanistan.

He added that the United States has a “solid guarantee” that the NATO alliance will promptly come to its aid if attacked.
