Spain Alarmed Again as Passenger Train Collides with Crane, Injuring Several Fourth Rail Accident in a Week

Spain remains unsettled after another train accident when a passenger train crashed into a crane near the city of Cartagena, injuring at least four people. This is the fourth rail accident in less than a week.

On 23 Jan 2026, a Spanish passenger train collided with a crane near the port city of Cartagena, in the country's southeastern region, causing minor injuries to at least four people. This marks the fourth rail accident within one week, raising safety concerns among the public.

The Murcia regional emergency services reported that the incident occurred near Cartagena. The train did not derail or overturn. Initial reports came in shortly after noon.

This incident comes amid growing tension in Spain’s rail system after a high-speed train collision in Andalusia in the south killed at least 43 people last Sunday. Just two days later, a commuter train derailed near Barcelona when a barrier collapsed onto the tracks during heavy rain, resulting in the driver’s death and four passengers seriously injured.

Additionally, on the same day, another train collision occurred in Catalonia in the northeast, prompting Spain's main train drivers' union to call a nationwide strike to protest rail safety standards.
