Toyota to Recall Approximately 162,000 Vehicles in the U.S. Due to Malfunctioning Display Screens

Toyota Motor has announced a recall of about 162,000 vehicles in the United States after detecting issues with the multimedia display screens in certain models, which may cause the screen to freeze or turn black, creating hazards when reversing.

Toyota Motor Corp. announced a recall of approximately 162,000 vehicles in the United States, including the 2024–2025 Toyota Tundra pickup trucks and 2024–2025 Tundra Hybrid models. The recall follows the discovery of issues with the multimedia display screens, which under certain conditions may freeze on the camera image or show a blank black screen, potentially causing the system to fail U.S. government safety standards and increasing risks when using the rearview camera while reversing.

According to Toyota's report, the problem involves the display screen possibly freezing on a particular camera angle or showing only a black screen under certain conditions. If this occurs during reversing, the rearview camera image may not appear, failing to meet U.S. government safety standards.

Toyota stated it will send notification letters to affected vehicle owners by late March 2026, inviting them to service centers for free inspections and repairs to resolve the issue.

Although the display screen malfunction may seem minor, modern vehicle multimedia systems show the rearview camera and vital driving information. Failure to display the camera image can increase the risk of unintentionally hitting people or objects behind the vehicle, and may not comply with the U.S. FMVSS 111 standard concerning rear visibility in vehicles.

While the announcement does not yet detail the repair methods, typically Toyota service centers will update the software or replace relevant parts free of charge when customers bring their vehicles in following the recall notice.

Previously, Toyota recalled 2022–2025 Tundra and Sequoia models for software fixes related to the rearview camera display. The U.S. safety agency (NHTSA) noted that this issue could cause the rearview image not to display while reversing. The required software updates were provided free at service centers.
