Toyota Motor has announced a recall of about 162,000 vehicles in the United States after detecting a problem with the multimedia display screens in certain models, which may cause the screen to freeze or turn black, posing a danger when reversing.
Toyota Motor Corporation announced a recall of approximately 162,000 vehicles in the U.S., including the 2024–2025 model years of the Toyota Tundra pickup and Tundra Hybrid. The issue involves the multimedia display screen which may freeze on a camera image or show a blank black screen under certain conditions, potentially causing the system to fail U.S. safety standards and increasing risk when using the rearview camera while reversing.
According to Toyota’s report, the problem includes the display screen freezing on one camera view or showing only a black screen under certain conditions. If this occurs while reversing, the camera image may not appear, which does not comply with U.S. government safety standards.
Toyota stated it will send letters to owners of affected vehicles by late March 2026, inviting them to service centers for free inspections and repairs.
Although the display screen malfunction may seem minor, modern vehicle multimedia systems show the rearview camera and important driving information. If the camera image fails to display, it could increase the risk of accidentally hitting people or objects behind the vehicle. It may also violate FMVSS 111, the U.S. federal standard concerning rear visibility in automobiles.
While the current announcement does not specify repair methods, Toyota service centers typically address such issues by providing free software updates or replacing related parts when customers bring their vehicles in for recall service.
Previously, Toyota had other cases involving camera or display issues in the 2022–2025 Tundra and Sequoia models recalled to fix rearview camera software problems. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) noted that those issues could prevent the rearview image from displaying while reversing, with free software updates provided at service centers.
