Myanmar Military Continues Random Airstrikes, Bombing Funerals and Weddings in Multiple Areas, Killing 27 Civilians

The Myanmar military has continued indiscriminate air attacks, recently bombing funerals and weddings in several areas, resulting in at least 27 civilian deaths and dozens injured. This is seen as a deliberate massacre of the population.

On 24 Jan 2026 GMT+7, Irrawaddy News Agency reported that on the evening of Thursday, 23 Jan, the Myanmar military dropped bombs on a funeral ceremony in the Ka Ja village, Hpakant town, Kachin State. This attack killed at least 22 attendees and injured 28 others, including three children.

A spokesperson for the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), which controls the area, revealed that Ka Ja village serves as a refuge for families displaced by war and lies on the opposite side of the Irrawaddy River from Hpakant town. The bombs struck a group of villagers gathered in the funeral house preparing for the next day's prayer ceremony for an elderly villager who had just passed away.

The spokesperson stated that the village has no KIA forces or military presence, accusing the military of deliberately attacking civilians. They said the military never distinguishes between military targets and civilians, bombing any group of people gathered together, including schools.

Earlier the same day, Myanmar military fighter jets also bombed a group of villagers preparing for a wedding in Tatkon village, Magway region, killing at least five people, including one child. Additionally, on Tuesday evening, the Myanmar Air Force attacked a prison controlled by the Arakan Army near the border towns of Kyauktaw and Ponnagyun, resulting in 21 deaths and 30 injuries among detained government soldiers and their relatives.

These recent attacks are part of a widespread indiscriminate bombing campaign causing severe damage across the country over several years. In October 2022, the Myanmar military bombed a concert celebrating the 62nd anniversary of the Kachin Independence Organization in Phakant town, killing 80 people. According to the National Unity Government's report, in 2025 alone, the military's air attacks killed at least 2,326 civilians, injured 4,146, destroyed 3,576 homes, 102 schools, 36 medical facilities, and 190 religious sites.
