U.S. Federal Agent Fatally Shoots Second Person in Minnesota, Citing Self-Defense

A U.S. federal agent fatally shot a person in Minnesota, the second such death in a month, claiming self-defense because the deceased approached them with a firearm.

On Saturday, 24 Jan 2026 GMT+7, a U.S. federal agent fatally shot a man in Minneapolis. This marks the second death this month caused by federal agents amid increased immigration law enforcement under President Donald Trump.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security stated that Border Patrol agents shot the man in self-defense after he approached them with a handgun and two additional loaded magazines.

Brian O'Hara, Minneapolis Police Chief, did not name the deceased but said he was 37 years old, a local resident, believed to be a U.S. citizen with a legally held firearm license and no criminal record.

A widely circulated video online and broadcast by multiple media outlets shows masked individuals wearing tactical vests struggling with a man on a snow-covered street before gunfire is heard. In the video, the man falls to the ground, followed by several more gunshots.

Later, footage from the scene showed immigration officers using tear gas to disperse a growing crowd of witnesses gathering at the site.

Jacob Frey, Minneapolis Mayor, called on the Trump administration to immediately end immigration law enforcement operations in Minnesota. "How many more residents or Americans must die or be seriously injured before this operation ends?" he said at a press conference.

Minnesota's governor and state senators also urged federal agents to withdraw. Meanwhile, Chief O'Hara stated that tensions remain high at the scene, with potential for violence, and asked the public to avoid the area.

The shooting occurred just one day after over 10,000 people gathered in freezing temperatures to protest the deployment of 3,000 federal agents ordered by Trump to Minnesota.

Residents expressed anger over several incidents, including the killing of U.S. citizen Renee Good, detentions of U.S. citizens taken from their homes wearing only underwear, and the detention of a 5-year-old boy after his father was arrested.
