A dramatic incident occurred midair in Indonesia when a small plane carrying 15 passengers malfunctioned shortly after takeoff. The pilot attempted a water landing but was unsuccessful. Fortunately, all passengers and crew survived.
A small Cessna 208B Grand Caravan operated by Smart Air experienced an emergency before crashing into the sea off the coast of Nabire city, Central Papua province, Indonesia, around noon local time today.
The plane was servicing the Nabire–Kaimana route with 13 passengers and 2 pilots on board. Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft encountered problems, prompting the captain to attempt an emergency water landing near Nabire Airport.
Video footage from the scene shows the plane floating on the water's surface while rescue personnel and volunteers rapidly moved in to assist. Several passengers had exited the plane and were standing on the wings and fuselage awaiting help.
The Nabire city police chief confirmed that all passengers and pilots are safe and in stable condition.
Meanwhile, PT Smart Jakuvala Aviation, the flight operator, stated the initial cause was a continuous loss of engine power, preventing the pilot from returning to the airport.
Currently, Indonesian authorities are conducting a detailed investigation into the cause of the accident and reviewing the safety standards of the aircraft involved.
