China is the first country to praise Myanmar's recently completed general election, commending its smooth execution and expressing readiness to further strengthen relations with the military government.
On 28 January 2026, Mr. Guo Jiakun, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said at a press conference in Beijing that China congratulates Myanmar on successfully holding a stable, orderly general election with enthusiastic public participation. He also stated that China is ready to advance comprehensive strategic cooperation with Myanmar.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson also said China will strive to encourage the international community to respect the decisions of the Myanmar people and provide constructive assistance to restore peace, stability, and development in the country.
However, China's stance contrasts with many Western countries and international organizations that refuse to recognize this election, viewing it as a staged event to perpetuate the Myanmar military's power.
The general election in Myanmar was held under military government control, with the final round of voting, which was prolonged for nearly a month, concluding last Sunday amid reports of a lack of transparency and widespread public boycotts.
Reports indicate that preliminary vote counts show the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), representing the military government, is securing a predicted victory.
