Zelensky Condemns Russian Drone Attack on Passenger Train, Killing at Least 5

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a strong condemnation of the Russian drone attack on a passenger train in the Kharkiv region last Tuesday. One drone directly hit a passenger carriage, while two others exploded nearby, resulting in at least 5 deaths and numerous injuries.

Zelensky stated that at the time of the attack, there were 18 people inside the targeted carriage and over 200 people on the entire train. He emphasized that targeting civilians in this way "has no legitimate military justification." Zelensky posted on social media: "In any country, an attack on a civilian train by drones is seen the same way — as true terrorism."

In addition to the train attack, Russia has escalated airstrikes in other areas across the country. In Odessa, more than 50 drones attacked, killing 3 people and injuring dozens. Several residential buildings collapsed, and critical energy infrastructure was severely damaged. Near Kyiv, drones struck an apartment building, killing a married couple and injuring their 4-year-old child.

So far, Russia has not commented on these attacks. The ongoing strikes against infrastructure during what is the coldest winter in years have left millions of Ukrainians without heating, electricity, or running water.

The Kharkiv regional prosecutor reported that the train was traveling from Chop, near the western border, to the city of Barvinkove. This route is a vital corridor used by civilians and military personnel to travel home on leave.

Despite Russia's daily air attacks, diplomatic efforts continue. Last week, Ukraine, Russia, and the United States held talks in the United Arab Emirates, which all parties viewed positively. However, border issues remain unresolved, with new negotiations expected later this weekend.
