A tense incident unfolded at Iloilo International Airport in the Philippines when a 54-year-old male passenger, in a frenzy, threatened officials with a knife in front of many passengers before being shot to stop the incident and sustaining injuries.
The tense event occurred while the 54-year-old suspect was undergoing baggage inspection. Officials found a knife in his black shoulder bag and called for further inspection. However, the situation escalated when the suspect pulled the knife from his bag and began to act wildly in the security area.
Video footage from the scene shows the suspect barefoot, holding a knife, chasing police officers who retreated, then turning and running into the departing passenger hall amid loud screams, while other passengers panicked and fled in chaos.
After attempts to negotiate the suspect to surrender the weapon failed, police decided to use their firearms to stop him. He was shot in the chest, immediately fell down, was handcuffed, and then taken to the hospital in a wheelchair.
The Philippine Transportation Safety Office stated that these actions were taken to prevent serious harm that could have occurred, emphasizing that weapons and dangerous items are prohibited as they may be used for criminal acts such as hijacking aircraft.
The incident is currently under further investigation amid questions about airport security and preparedness for emergency situations that could arise at any time.
