American Man Arrested for Posing as FBI Agent to Free Suspected Murderer Luigi Mangioni

A cunning American man was arrested for impersonating an FBI agent and attempting to deceive staff at a federal prison into releasing Luigi Mangioni, a suspect in the 2024 murder case of the CEO of United Healthcare insurance company.

Mark Anderson, a 36-year-old from Minnesota, was arrested last Thursday (29 Jan) and charged with impersonating an official. According to the indictment, Anderson entered a federal prison in Brooklyn the previous Wednesday, claiming to be from the FBI and presenting what he said was a judge-certified release order for Mangioni. When prison staff asked to see his ID badge, Anderson instead showed a Minnesota driver's license, claimed he was armed, and threw various papers at the officers.

Authorities then detained and searched Anderson's bag, finding a large barbecue fork and a thin round metal object resembling a pizza cutter. Police reported that Anderson had traveled from Minnesota to New York City seeking work and had been employed at a pizza restaurant.

Anderson appeared in court last Thursday but has yet to enter a plea. International news agencies have attempted to contact his attorney for further information. Jury selection for Mangioni's high-profile trial is scheduled for the upcoming September.

Mangioni has been held in Brooklyn detention since 2024, after being nationwide fugitive and then captured at a well-known fast-food restaurant in Pennsylvania. He was extradited to New York, where he faces charges of second-degree intentional murder of Brian Thompson, CEO of the major U.S. insurance company United Healthcare. He was acquitted of first- and second-degree murder charges under New York's anti-terrorism laws due to insufficient evidence.

Since his arrest, Mangioni has received substantial support both online and from supporters attending his court appearances who agree with his actions. Meanwhile, the murder case has sparked nationwide debate in the U.S. over the high costs of the healthcare system.
