China Orders Investigation of Emergency Management Minister Suspected of Corruption

Chinese authorities revealed they are investigating the Minister of Emergency Management on charges of serious disciplinary and legal violations, making him the latest senior official to face scrutiny in recent weeks.,

On Saturday, 31 Jan 2026 GMT+7, China's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) issued a statement saying that Wang Xiangsi, Minister of Emergency Management, is under investigation for suspected "serious disciplinary and legal violations," a phrase implicitly referring to corruption.

The CCDI did not provide further details about Wang, who also serves as Communist Party Secretary, but it is rare for a Chinese minister to be investigated while still in office.

Under President Xi Jinping's leadership, the Chinese government has been intensifying its anti-corruption campaign for several years. Last week, the Ministry of Defense announced an investigation into Zhang Youxia, one of the country's top generals and the only military leader second in authority to Xi.

President Xi said this month that anti-corruption is a battlefield China cannot afford to lose, following a record 65 senior officials investigated last year, with probes extending to former university executives and state enterprise leaders.

Wang, aged 63, took office as minister in July 2022 after previously serving as chairman of National Energy Investment Corp, a state-owned power producer.

According to official reports from the Ministry of Emergency Management, Wang last appeared publicly on Tuesday, 27 Jan 2026 GMT+7, attending an internal meeting where senior officials were required to conduct self-criticism.

Additionally, state media China Daily reported that anti-corruption authorities have announced an investigation into Sun Xiaocheng, former Communist Party Secretary of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
