Israel launched a new round of airstrikes in the Gaza Strip, resulting in 28 deaths. The strikes were claimed to be retaliation against Hamas for violating the ceasefire agreement.
Foreign news agencies reported that the Israeli military launched a large-scale air assault across multiple areas of the Gaza Strip on Saturday, 31 Jan 2026, causing at least 28 deaths and many injuries.
The civil defense agency in Gaza, operated by Hamas, said that children and women were among the dead. It added that during one attack, an assault helicopter struck refugee tents in Khan Yunis, in southern Gaza.
Hamas further stated that seven victims were members of the same displaced family in Khan Yunis, while a civil defense spokesperson added that the strikes targeted residential buildings, tents, shelters, and police stations.
Meanwhile, officials at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City reported that an Israeli airstrike hit a residential building, killing three children and two women.
Since the ceasefire began on 10 Oct 2025, Israel has continued to attack various areas in the Gaza Strip, resulting in at least 504 Palestinian deaths, while four Israeli soldiers have died during the same period.
Regarding the latest strikes, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated they collaborated with the Israeli Security Agency (ISA) to target multiple sites, including "four commanders and additional militants," as well as weapons depots, weapons manufacturing facilities, and "two Hamas rocket launch bases in central Gaza."
The IDF said the attacks were in response to Hamas violating the ceasefire on the previous Friday, after detecting eight militants emerging from underground tunnels in the eastern area of Rafah, at Gaza’s southernmost point. Under the ceasefire, that area is designated for Israeli military deployment.
Hamas condemned the latest Israeli attacks and called on the United States to take immediate action. They added that the ongoing violations of the ceasefire confirm that the Israeli government continues its brutal genocidal war in the Gaza Strip.
