Indonesia Lifts Grok Ban with Conditions and Strict Controls

Indonesian authorities have decided to lift the ban on the chatbot Grok after X promised to improve its operations to prevent Grok from being used improperly, following incidents involving the manipulation of pornographic images.

Foreign news agencies reported on 1 Feb 2026 that Indonesia has allowed Elon Musk's chatbot Grok to resume service after the social network provider X pledged to improve operations to comply with the country's laws.

Grok was banned by Indonesia three weeks ago because the AI chatbot was used to manipulate images of X users into pornographic content, including child pornography, prompting condemnation from governments worldwide.

A statement from the Ministry of Communications and Digital Affairs, seen by Reuters on Sunday (1 Feb), said the government is restoring access to Grok "conditionally and under strict supervision."

“The resumption of Grok’s normal service is conditional, following a written commitment from X Corp outlining concrete steps to improve the service and prevent misuse. This commitment serves as a basis for evaluation, not the end of regulatory oversight,” said Alexander Zabar, a senior ministry official, in the statement.

Zabar added that X has initiated a "tiered" set of measures to address misuse of the Grok service, and these measures will be subject to ongoing review.
