U.S. President Donald Trump urged Iran to quickly reach a nuclear agreement, declaring that if negotiations fail, it will become clear whether war will break out as Iran's leader has warned.
On Sunday (1 Feb 2026), U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that if Iran fails to reach a nuclear deal with the U.S., the world will soon see whether the warning from Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei—that a U.S. attack would ignite war in the region—is true.
"Why wouldn't he say that? Of course, you can say that," Trump told reporters when asked about Iran's leader's challenging remarks on the potential consequences if the U.S. launches an attack.
"But we have the largest and most powerful warships in the world stationed very close by," Trump added. "And we hope to reach a deal... but if we can't, then we'll find out if what he said is true."
Earlier on Saturday, Trump said Iran was "seriously negotiating" with the U.S., but he declined to reveal whether he had made a decision on using military force against the Iranian government.
Meanwhile, Iranian state media reported that Khamenei told a crowd in Tehran on Sunday that Iran "has no intention to attack any country, but the Iranian nation will strongly retaliate against anyone who attacks or threatens us."
According to CNN, this development comes after reports last week that Trump was considering a large-scale attack plan on Iran following stalled preliminary talks between Washington and Tehran on limiting Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile programs.
The U.S. has also deployed the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln heading closer to Iran, preparing to support any potential U.S. operations against Iran.
