On 2 February 2026, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported that Kim Jong Un, North Korea's supreme leader, attended the inauguration ceremony of the "Sinuiju Combined Greenhouse Farm" in Sinuiju city, located in the country's northwest. He praised the project as an impressive success ahead of the upcoming 9th Workers' Party Congress.
The report stated that the opening ceremony was held on 1 February, about one year after the project's groundbreaking in February last year. The greenhouse farm is situated on Wiwha Island, a large area in Sinuiju city that was heavily damaged by floods during the summer of 2024. The North Korean government has prioritized this project as a measure to restore residents' livelihoods.
The North Korean leader expressed satisfaction that the greenhouse farm has become a lifeline for the people of Sinuiju, who have faced repeated flooding over many generations. He also noted that soldiers and the nation's youth worked together to create this outstanding achievement, which will be presented at the 9th Workers' Party Congress, a major political event held every five years and the country's most important political gathering.
