French Authorities Raid Xs Paris Office, Summon Elon Musk for Questioning

French authorities raided X's Paris office to expand investigations concerning the Grok chatbot and summoned Elon Musk along with the former CEO for questioning.

On Tuesday, 3 Feb 2026 GMT+7, the Paris Prosecutor's Office issued a statement saying French police raided the office of X, a popular social media network, and ordered billionaire Elon Musk, owner of the platform, to appear for questioning in April.

The prosecutor's office said on Tuesday that the raid is linked to an investigation France began in January 2025, with the cybercrime unit conducting the search assisted by Europol (European Police).

Laure Beccuau, Paris's chief prosecutor, revealed that both Elon Musk, as chairman of X's board, and Linda Yaccarino, former CEO, have been summoned for questioning in April, while X employees will be interviewed as witnesses.

Beccuau added that the investigation, originally focused on suspicions of algorithm misuse, has been broadened to include issues of “pornographic manipulated images” created by Grok, X's AI chatbot, and the dissemination of content denying the Jewish Holocaust.

Previously, X denied all accusations and stated in July last year that the French investigation was “politically motivated” and an attack on freedom of expression.

Last week, the European Commission began examining Grok following heavy criticism over its ability to generate explicit sexual images. This scrutiny intensified late last year after the chatbot reportedly produced a large number of nude images, including those of women and children, upon user requests on X.

The Paris prosecutor's office said it will investigate possible criminal offenses including involvement in possession and distribution of child pornography, and violations of personal image rights through sexually explicit deepfake images.

In mid-January, X announced new restrictions on Grok's image generation, stating the chatbot would no longer create nude images of real individuals. However, data from AI Forensics, a European nonprofit, indicated that as of 20 January the chatbot was still used to produce pornographic images of people.

Indonesian and Malaysian authorities suspended Grok at the end of January but recently lifted the bans after X pledged to implement measures preventing misuse of the chatbot.
