The ex-husband of Jill Biden, former First Lady of the United States, has been charged by police with the murder of his current wife following a domestic dispute at their home.
Foreign news agencies reported on 3 Feb 2026 that William Stevenson, Jill Biden's ex-husband and spouse of Joe Biden, former U.S. president, was charged with the murder of Linda Stevenson, his current wife.
New Castle County police in Delaware announced Monday that 77-year-old William Stevenson was charged with first-degree murder after a weeks-long investigation into the death of his 64-year-old wife, Linda.
Police stated that Stevenson is currently held at the detention center in Wilmington, Delaware, after failing to post $500,000 bail.
Officials said in an earlier statement that on 28 December 2025, police responded to a domestic dispute at Stevenson's home and found Linda Stevenson unconscious and unresponsive in the living room.
Police said officers attempted emergency aid but were unsuccessful; an autopsy is underway to determine the exact cause of death.
Jill Biden was previously married to Stevenson, a former college football player, from 1970 to 1975. They married when Jill was 18 and Stevenson was 23, before she met Joe Biden in March 1975 and married him in 1977.
Stevenson is currently a businessman and owns "Stone Balloon," a popular bar frequented by students near the University of Delaware.
