The Iranian president announced readiness to negotiate with the U.S., while Donald Trump warned that if no agreement is reached, something bad could happen.
On Tuesday, 3 Feb 2026 GMT+7, Masoud Pezeshkian, the Iranian president, stated that his country is ready to negotiate with the U.S. after receiving a request from “friendly governments in the region” to accept proposals for opening talks.
Pezeshkian stated in a post on X that he has ordered Abbas Araghchi, the foreign minister, to conduct negotiations under conditions that create a suitable environment free from threats and unreasonable expectations.
The Iranian president also said that Iran will conduct “fair and equal” negotiations with the U.S., adding that these talks should be “within the framework of mutual benefits for both countries.”
Pezeshkian’s statement came after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned that any form of U.S. attack on Iran would trigger a “regional war.”
U.S. President Donald Trump responded, saying if Iran does not agree on a nuclear deal and stops killing protesters, they will see whether the war he mentioned will actually happen.
U.S. media reported that the talks might be held in Istanbul this Friday, with Araghchi scheduled to meet U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.
Foreign ministers from Egypt, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates have also been invited to participate in these discussions.
Earlier, Araghchi told CNN that he was confident “we will reach an agreement” to “ensure that no nuclear weapons are produced.”
However, Iran continues to insist that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only and denies allegations that it is trying to develop nuclear weapons.
Meanwhile, when asked by reporters about the prospects of reaching an agreement, President Trump said, “If we find a common way out, that would be very good. But if we can't, something bad will probably happen.”
Trump emphasized that “massive forces” are heading toward Iran, including the “largest and best” warships.
The U.S. has been continuously reinforcing its military presence near Iran over the past few weeks, including deploying the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, which carries about 70 aircraft, along with three destroyers equipped with Tomahawk cruise missiles to the Arabian region.
