Israel launched attacks on multiple areas in the Gaza Strip again on Wednesday, causing 20 deaths after an Israeli soldier was critically wounded by gunfire in Gaza.
Foreign news agencies reported on 4 Feb 2026, citing disclosures from several hospitals in the Gaza Strip, that at least 20 Palestinians, including several children and one medical worker, died in Israel's new wave of attacks, with nearly 40 others wounded.
The Israeli military stated that tanks and aircraft conducted precise strikes against groups they referred to as "terrorists" who opened fire on their soldiers stationed in northern Gaza, seriously injuring one soldier.
The Israeli military added that the attack occurred near the “Yellow Line,” the demarcation line where Israeli forces are deployed, and that this incident clearly violated the ceasefire agreement Hamas had made with them.
Hamas accused Israel of using the shooting incident as a pretext to justify the continued killing and invasion of Gaza's civilian population.
Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City reported receiving 13 bodies, including five children, all killed in attacks on displaced persons' tents and homes in the Zeitoun and Tuffah neighborhoods in the eastern part of the city.
Meanwhile, Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis reported four deaths, including one child, who were brought in after attacks on displaced persons' tents in the Qizan Rashwan area in the south. Subsequent strikes in the Al-Mawasi coastal area of Khan Yunis killed two children and one rescue worker.
Rescue officials from the civil defense unit under Hamas administration told Reuters that the rescue worker rushed to aid victims in the Al-Mawasi tent attack before being killed in a second strike at the same location.
The Palestinian Red Crescent Society accused the Israeli military of seriously violating international humanitarian law, which protects medical personnel.
Both Israel and Hamas have accused each other of breaching the ceasefire agreement almost daily since its implementation on 10 Oct 2025.
Last Sunday, Israel launched widespread attacks across the Gaza Strip resulting in over 30 deaths. The Israeli military stated the strikes began after discovering armed groups emerging from tunnels in Rafah city in southern Gaza.
