Russia launched a drone attack on Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region, causing the immediate death of a couple inside their home amid ongoing tense peace negotiations in Abu Dhabi.
Today (6 Feb), Ivan Fedorov, governor of Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region, reported via the Telegram app that Russia sent drones to attack Vilniansk city in Zaporizhzhia. The attack resulted in a couple—a 49-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman—dying instantly at their residence. Additionally, another attack struck Zaporizhzhia city, injuring a 14-year-old boy. Meanwhile, the city of Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, was also attacked, though initial reports show no casualties or injuries.
This attack on Zaporizhzhia followed trilateral talks last week in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, involving Ukraine, Russia, and the United States. The talks aimed to halt Russia's over four-year-long aggression against Ukraine. The discussions resulted in the first prisoner exchange in four months. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated he wants faster progress and remains somewhat unsatisfied with the outcomes, adding that peace talks will continue in the coming weeks.
Fighting intensified again after the expiration of a seven-day ceasefire agreed upon by Russia and the U.S., during which Russia pledged not to attack Ukraine. Ukraine claims Russia deliberately targeted energy infrastructure, leaving hundreds of thousands without electricity amid freezing temperatures.
Valentin Demidov, mayor of Russia's Belgorod city, responded today (6 Feb) on Telegram, accusing Ukraine of firing missiles that heavily damaged the city's infrastructure. However, there are currently no reports of casualties on the Russian side.
