Italy Investigates Sabotage Attacks on Railway Network at Three Northern Locations

Italian police are investigating sabotage incidents at three locations on the country's northern railway network. They believe these events may be connected to the ongoing Winter Olympics.

Foreign news agencies reported on 7 Feb 2026 that Italian officials indicated suspicious sabotage attacks on the northern railway network severely disrupted regional travel, as many gathered for the Winter Olympics opening ceremony.

Italian police stated that three separate attacks caused damage to railway tracks. Authorities believe the motive is linked to the Winter Olympics.

An arson attack was carried out on a railway switch near Pesaro, on the Adriatic coast. Hours later, police discovered cut electrical cables near Bologna along with a simple explosive device left near nearby tracks.

Italy's Ministry of Transport described these incidents as "serious sabotage," similar to attacks during the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Bologna's train station is a major transportation hub in Italy, connecting cities north to south and routes from east to west.

An Italian police spokesperson previously said investigations are ongoing, and so far no individual or group has claimed responsibility for the attacks.
