An explosion at a biotechnology factory in China on Saturday has resulted in eight deaths. The exact cause of the explosion remains unclear, while local media reported thick yellow smoke billowing from the site.
Xinhua News Agency reported on Sunday, 8 Feb 2026 GMT+7, that the death toll from the explosion at Jiafeng Biotech's biotechnology factory in Shanxi Province, northern China, rose to eight after the body of a previously missing victim was found.
The company is located in Shan Yin district, about 400 km west of Beijing. The cause of the explosion is still unclear, and authorities are conducting an investigation. Local media reported seeing thick yellow smoke rising from the explosion site, and the company's legal representative has been detained by officials.
This is not the first factory explosion in China this year. In late January, an explosion at a steel factory in Inner Mongolia, near Shanxi Province, killed at least nine people.
