An Iranian court sentenced Narges Mohammadi, a female activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, to an additional seven and a half years in prison, bringing her total sentence to 44 years.

Foreign news agencies reported on Sunday, 8 Feb 2026 GMT+7, that Mustafa Nili, lawyer for Iranian human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi, disclosed that she was sentenced to another seven and a half years in prison by an Iranian court.

Nili announced on social media Sunday that Mohammadi was sentenced in the northeastern city of Mashhad to six years for "assembly and conspiracy" and an additional one and a half years for "propaganda activities."

The 53-year-old Mohammadi was awarded the prize in 2023 while she was imprisoned for her activism against the oppression of women in Iran.

In addition to the prison sentence, Mohammadi was banned from traveling abroad for two years and ordered to be exiled to the eastern Khusf region for two years.

Nili also said his client was taken to hospital three days ago due to deteriorating health before being returned to the detention center where she is held. "When she began describing the events and how she was detained, the phone line was cut off," he said.

Mohammadi's husband, Taghi Rahmani, said she did not present a defense in court because of her firm belief that the justice process lacks legitimacy, viewing these proceedings as a predetermined theatrical performance.

This latest ruling increases Mohammadi's total prison sentence to 44 years. Previously, she served over 10 years in prison, and in 2021 she was sentenced to 13 years for propaganda against the state and conspiracy against national security.

She was temporarily released for three weeks from Tehran’s notorious Evin Prison in December 2024 for medical reasons, before being re-arrested in December 2025 while attending a memorial for Kasra Alikhordi, a lawyer found dead in his office earlier that month.
