Hundreds of Argentinians gathered on the shore of the saline lake Mar Chiquita to attempt setting a new world record for the most people floating simultaneously, amid the lively atmosphere of a local festival.
The event was held in the city of Miramar during the annual "Festival de la Planchita," now in its second year. Organizers aimed to gather at least 1,942 participants to break the previous record set nearly a decade ago.
The current world record was set in 2017 at Lake Epecuén, another saline lake in Argentina, where 1,941 people floated simultaneously and successfully formed a large human chain.
According to Guinness World Records rules, organizers must coordinate and manage at least 1,942 participants to float simultaneously without assistance and maintain the floating position for the required time to receive official recognition.
Lake Mar Chiquita is an ideal location for this record attempt due to its high salinity—classified as a hypersaline lake—providing natural buoyancy that helps participants float easily, even if they are not professional swimmers.
Organizers hope this effort will not only set a new world record for Argentina but also promote local tourism in Miramar and add vibrancy to the increasingly popular annual festival.
