Hundreds of Argentinians gathered at the shore of the saline Mar Chiquita lake to attempt a new world record for the most people floating simultaneously, amid the lively atmosphere of a local festival.
The event was held in the city of Miramar as part of the annual 'Festival de la Planchita,' now in its second year. Organizers aimed to gather at least 1,942 participants to surpass the record set nearly 10 years ago.
The current world record was set in 2017 at Lake Epecuén, another saline lake in Argentina, where 1,941 people floated simultaneously and successfully formed a large human chain.
According to Guinness World Records rules, organizers must coordinate at least 1,942 participants to float together without any aids and maintain the floating position for a set time to have the record officially recognized.
Mar Chiquita lake is an ideal location for this record attempt due to its high salinity, classifying it as a hypersaline lake. This natural buoyancy helps participants float easily, even if they are not professional swimmers.
Organizers hope this effort will not only set a new world record for Argentina but also promote local tourism in Miramar and add vibrancy to the increasingly popular annual festival.
