China Denies US Allegations of Secret Nuclear Tests, Accuses US of Lying to Justify Own Tests

China denies US allegations that it has secretly conducted multiple nuclear bomb tests and accuses the US of seeking excuses to resume its own nuclear weapons testing.

On Monday, 9 Feb 2026 GMT+7, Chinese authorities denied US claims that the Dragon Nation has secretly conducted nuclear bomb tests. China described these claims as "complete lies" and accused Washington of looking for excuses to start its own testing.

At a United Nations disarmament meeting in Geneva on Friday (6 Feb 2026 GMT+7), Thomas DiNanno, US Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control, accused China of secretly testing nuclear bombs multiple times, including once on 22 June 2020 GMT+7, and preparing for further tests.

"The US allegations are baseless and completely false. China opposes US efforts to create excuses to restart its own nuclear testing," the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement. China also called on the US to "immediately stop irresponsible actions."

Earlier, in October last year, US President Donald Trump said Washington would begin nuclear weapons testing "on equal footing" with Moscow and Beijing, though he did not specify what type of nuclear tests he intended to start.

DiNanno's remarks came as he presented a new US plan calling for trilateral talks with Russia and China to set new limits on nuclear arms after the New START treaty expired. The treaty was the last remaining nuclear arms control agreement between the US and Russia.

However, Chinese authorities stated they refuse to participate in disarmament negotiations "at this stage."
