Trump Signs Extension of Myanmar National Emergency, Keeping U.S. Sanctions on Military for Another Year

Donald Trump has extended the national emergency regarding Myanmar for another year, ensuring that sanctions against the military remain in force. He emphasized that the situation continues to pose a threat to U.S. national security and foreign policy.

On 9 February 2026 GMT+7, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an extension of the national emergency declaration related to Myanmar for an additional year. This mechanism allows the U.S. to continue imposing sanctions on Myanmar's military government.

Trump stated that the national emergency, first enacted shortly after the 2021 coup, remains necessary because the situation in and related to Myanmar continues to be an unusual and severe threat to U.S. national security and foreign policy.

At the same time, Trump signed the government's budget bill allocating $121 million in humanitarian aid for Myanmar, making clear that this aid will not be sent to the military government.

U.S. sanctions on Myanmar's military government include bans on aviation fuel sales and blacklisting financial institutions that transact with the military. The U.S. leader added that the government will closely monitor progress in negotiations and violence reduction in Myanmar, warning that the U.S. is ready to adjust pressure levels as necessary to protect national interests.
