A prominent Venezuelan opposition leader disappeared mysteriously shortly after being released from prison, with his family stating that this was a kidnapping.
Foreign news agencies reported on 10 Feb 2026 that Juan Pablo Guanipa, a Venezuelan opposition leader imprisoned during President Nicolás Maduro’s administration, mysteriously disappeared shortly after his release from prison, with his family believing he was abducted.
After the U.S. military raided President Maduro’s residence in Caracas in January, Venezuela’s new government led by Acting President Delsi Rodríguez released dozens of opposition officials and others previously detained under Maduro’s rule.
Guanipa, an ally of Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado and recipient of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, was among those released.
Guanipa’s family revealed that after he spoke to supporters about Venezuela’s transition to a free society, he was kidnapped by unidentified men, while his son demanded the government provide proof that Guanipa is still alive.
Venezuela’s Attorney General’s Office stated in a Monday (9 Feb) release that it has requested the court to revoke Guanipa’s release, citing violations of his release conditions and asking that he be confined to his home instead; however, the statement did not specify Guanipa’s current whereabouts.
