China Reaffirms Support for Pro-Unification Forces in Taiwan, Vows Crackdown on Separatists

A senior Chinese leader reiterated Beijing's stance supporting groups favoring national unification in Taiwan, announcing firm measures against pro-independence supporters amid rising military and political pressure in the Taiwan Strait.

On 10 Feb 2026, Wang Huning, a member of the Communist Party of China's Politburo Standing Committee and China's fourth-ranking leader, said at the annual Taiwan affairs meeting that officials must advance the grand mission of national unification. He stated that the mainland government would fully support the "patriotic forces advocating unification" in Taiwan and would decisively act against groups regarded as "separatists."

Wang also said China must resolutely back patriotic forces supporting unification on the island, suppress groups promoting Taiwan independence, oppose interference from external forces, and safeguard peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

China has long considered Taiwan part of its territory despite opposition from Taiwan's government and has continuously increased military and political pressure. Beijing has offered the "one country, two systems" framework to Taiwan, similar to Hong Kong’s, but no major Taiwanese political party supports this approach.
