U.S. House of Representatives Votes Against Trumps Tax Measures on Canada

The U.S. House of Representatives voted against President Donald Trump's tax measures targeting Canada, delivering a significant blow to the White House, although the resolution does not immediately repeal the tariffs.

On 11 Feb 2026, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution by 219 to 211 opposing President Donald Trump's tariff increases on Canadian imports, a rare challenge to White House policy. However, the resolution does not automatically cancel the tariffs without Trump's support, which is unlikely as he continues to view tariffs as a key tool to pressure trading partners back to negotiations. Following the vote, Trump responded immediately, issuing political warnings to members who voted against his approach.

Before the vote, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson attempted to block the vote, but the plan failed when six Republican members broke ranks to join Democrats in supporting the resolution.

Nevertheless, the next step is for the resolution to be sent to the Senate for consideration, amid a politically tense atmosphere caused by the Trump administration's trade policies.
