Brazil Issues Deadline for Grok to Stop Creating Pornographic Deepfake Images Within 5 Days

Brazilian authorities have taken serious action by ordering the AI chatbot "Grok" to stop creating pornographic deepfake images, threatening lawsuits and fines if the order is not complied with within 5 days.

Yesterday (11 Feb), Brazilian officials ordered the popular social media platform X to suspend the chatbot "Grok" from generating pornographic deepfake images. Brazil is the latest country to pressure billionaire app owner Elon Musk to promptly address issues caused by this AI tool.

Indonesia was the first country to take countermeasures by completely suspending Grok last month. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom and France have pledged to continue pressuring the billionaire after discovering that the chatbot produced numerous pornographic images of women and children.

Brazil's Attorney General's Office, together with the National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) and the National Consumer Protection Agency (Senacon), stated that Brazil has given X only 5 days to implement appropriate measures to prevent Grok from producing sexual or erotic content involving children, youth, and adults without consent. Failure to comply could result in lawsuits and fines from Brazilian authorities.

Although X claims to have deleted thousands of posts and suspended hundreds of user accounts following Brazil's warnings last month, investigations found users still able to generate pornographic deepfake images using Grok. Brazilian authorities criticized X's handling of the problem as lacking transparency.

Pressure continues to mount on xAI, Elon Musk's AI technology company, due to a feature called Spicy Mode that allows users to easily create sexually suggestive deepfake images by typing commands like "make her wear a bikini" or "take off her clothes."

The Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) estimates that within just a few days, Grok has generated over 3 million pornographic images of women and children.
