Aberdeen City Sees Sunlight for First Time in 21 Days

Aberdeen city in Scotland has finally seen sunlight after being under continuous cloud cover for 21 days, breaking its record for the longest period without sun.

Foreign news agencies reported that Aberdeen in Scotland received sunlight for the first time in 21 days on Thursday, 12 Feb 2026, after being shrouded in thick clouds throughout, marking the longest sunless period since meteorological records began in 1957.

The last time sunlight shone on the city was on 21 Jan, and finally, residents saw the sun on the late afternoon of Thursday.

The Meteorological Office confirmed an official recording of 30 minutes of sunlight in Dyce, a suburb of Aberdeen, until around 4:00 p.m. local time.

However, the Meteorological Office also issued a yellow warning for snow and ice across Scotland overnight on the same day.

Kate Finlay, 21, said she was very happy to finally see the sun in Aberdeen. “Honestly, it was very strange. The first thing I did when I stepped out of my apartment was text my friends, ‘Guys, the sun is out.’ It felt really odd. I opened the curtains and thought, ‘Oh, it’s brighter now,’ and when I went outside, I saw the blue sky. I was honestly shocked.”

“It was really tough being stuck inside because of the damp weather. We didn’t want to go out or do much,” Finlay said. “It was quite depressing. I’m really glad the sun is finally back.”

The northeast region of Scotland experienced heavy snowfall during the first 10 days of 2026, and since then, rain has fallen almost continuously.

In January alone, Aboyne in Aberdeenshire received over 277 mm of rain, nearly four times the average monthly amount.

Experts explained that the situation resulted from a “blocked weather pattern,” where a large high- or low-pressure system remains stationary over an area for days or weeks, preventing other weather systems from passing through, causing persistent weather conditions.
