Knife Attack on Police During Eternal Flame Ceremony at Arc de Triomphe in Paris

A dramatic incident unfolded in central Paris when a man armed with a knife tried to attack police officers during the Eternal Flame ceremony honoring unknown soldiers at the tomb beneath the Arc de Triomphe.

Paris police officials stated the assailant targeted a police officer on duty securing the Eternal Flame ceremony, which commemorates unknown soldiers who died in war beneath a monument erected during Emperor Napoleon's era at the Arc de Triomphe. Another officer then fired at the attacker, wounding him. The man was immediately taken to hospital but died later.

Reports indicated that no civilians or police officers were injured in the incident, and authorities quickly regained control of the situation.

The Arc de Triomphe is one of France’s most iconic landmarks, located on the Champs-Élysées—a bustling shopping and tourist area in central Paris. The incident caused alarm among those present in the vicinity.

The French anti-terrorism prosecutor's office confirmed it has opened an investigation and dispatched officers to the scene to assess the motive and circumstances. The suspect was reportedly released from prison last December after serving a 12-year term for terrorism-related charges.
