Gunmen attacked three villages in Nigeria, killing 30 people. Several villagers were abducted, while homes and shops were set on fire.
Reuters reported that gunmen on motorcycles raided three villages in Niger State in northwestern Nigeria on the morning of Saturday, 14 Feb 2026. The attacks resulted in at least 30 deaths, and several homes and shops were burned down.
The attacks occurred in the Borgu local government area near the border with the Republic of Benin. The government has attributed these assaults to "bandit groups" responsible for attacks, kidnappings for ransom, and causing displacement among communities in the northern region.
Wasiu Abiodun, spokesperson for the Niger State police, confirmed an attack in one village, stating, "Suspected bandits invaded the village of Tunga-Makiri, killing six people. Several homes were set ablaze, and an unknown number of villagers were abducted."
Abiodun added that the attackers moved on to the village of Kongoso, while details of other attacks remain unclear.
Jeremiah Timothy, a resident of Kongoso who fled to a nearby area, said the assault on his village began at dawn amid sporadic gunfire. He reported that 26 people have died so far and that the police station was set on fire.
Another witness, who asked to remain anonymous, said the attackers came on over 200 motorcycles, sweeping through the area and targeting various villages.
"The bandits came into our town around 3 a.m. local time, riding many motorcycles and firing sporadically. They beheaded six people and killed others. They burned down shops and forced the entire village to flee for their lives," said Auwal Ibrahim, a resident of Tunga-Makiri.
