Lively Atmosphere as New Yorkers and Tourists Gather to Celebrate the Year of the Fire Horse Lunar New Year in Chinatown

New Yorkers and tourists gathered in Chinatown to celebrate the "Year of the Fire Horse" Lunar New Year, enjoying lion dances, colorful parades, and firecrackers to ward off evil spirits and invite prosperity throughout the year.

On 17 Feb 2026 GMT+7, the atmosphere in New York City's Chinatown was bustling as hundreds of locals and tourists came together to celebrate the Lunar New Year, welcoming the Year of the Fire Horse with grand lion dance performances and cultural activities.

The parade began at 1:00 PM, moving along Chinatown’s main streets, starting from the intersection of Mott and Canal Streets to Chatham Square, continuing along East Broadway, and ending near the intersection of Forsyth and Grand Streets.

The event featured brightly decorated floats, live music, and performances by diverse community groups, reflecting New York City's cultural diversity. Additionally, activity booths and shops lined Bayard Street between Mott and Mulberry Streets.

Organized by Better Chinatown USA, this event marked the finale of celebrations that began on 17 Feb 2026 GMT+7 with a firecracker festival on the first day of the Year of the Fire Horse. The firecrackers are a traditional highlight aimed at driving away evil spirits and blessing the new year with wealth and good fortune, according to Chinese beliefs.
