U.S. Supreme Court Overturns Donald Trumps Global Tariff Measures, Citing Overreach of Emergency Powers

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled to overturn Donald Trump's global import tariff measures after the White House used emergency powers granted by the 1977 law to bypass Congress, though it is still unclear whether tax refunds will be issued.

On 20 Feb 2026 GMT+7, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled to cancel the global import tariff measures announced by President Donald Trump, stating that using emergency powers to bypass Congressional approval exceeded legal limits.

Trump's tariff measures were implemented last year affecting multiple countries, justified by Trump as protection and stimulation of U.S. domestic manufacturing. However, instead of submitting legislation to Congress, the administration invoked the "International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977," declaring a national emergency that allowed the executive branch to issue orders immediately without legislative approval.

Earlier, in August 2025 GMT+7, the U.S. appeals court ruled that most of President Trump's tariff measures were unlawful but allowed them to remain temporarily in effect. Subsequently, the White House petitioned the Supreme Court to review and overturn the appeals court decision, leading to the Supreme Court's involvement in this case.

This ruling represents a major blow to the Trump administration's trade policies and may affect the future direction of U.S. trade relations with global partner countries. The full details of the judgment are still under further review.
